Guwahati, 15 January: Once again raising the question “Who is Himanta Biswa Sarma?”, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi strongly criticised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Reacting to the Chief Minister’s remarks on the issue of granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities, Gogoi said at a press conference held in New Delhi today, “Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the six communities will not be granted ST status before the Assembly elections. Who is Himanta Biswa Sarma to say this? Who is he to decide that the six communities will not be granted ST status before the elections? Will he take the decision? This is a law under the Central Government.”
At the press conference, the APCC President also raised several questions directed at the Assam Government regarding the information submitted to a Singapore court in connection with the death of Assam’s beloved artiste Zubeen Garg. Referring to the statement made by the investigating authority of Singapore in court that Zubeen Garg’s death was a natural one, even after a team of Assam Police had visited Singapore and held discussions with the local police, Gogoi questioned, “Now the question is—whom should the people of Assam believe? The Government of Singapore or Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma?”
He said that the representative of the Singapore Government has clearly stated that Zubeen Garg’s death was a natural death. In contrast, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has repeatedly stated publicly, and even on the floor of the Assembly, that Zubeen Garg was murdered. In this context, Gogoi asked, “Whom should the people of Assam believe?” He further questioned why there is no match between the statements of the two governments. He pointed out that Assam Police had gone to Singapore, held discussions and collected documents. Communication between the two governments has been evident, including tweets showing meetings between Assam Government representatives and the Singapore High Commissioner, as well as posts by the Singapore Embassy regarding Zubeen Garg. Yet, Gogoi asked, “One question remains—why is there no consistency between the statements of the two governments in the case of Zubeen Garg?”
He said that a responsible Chief Minister has claimed that Zubeen Garg was murdered, whereas the Singapore Government’s representative has stated that it was a natural death. Hence, Gogoi asked, “Who has failed to discharge responsibility? Has the Singapore Government failed, or has the SIT formed by Himanta Biswa Sarma failed?” He further asked, “Who is presenting false information before the people of Assam—the Singapore authorities or Himanta Biswa Sarma’s SIT?”
Gogoi stated that had there been proper coordination between the two governments, their statements would have matched. Instead, once again, the people of Assam have been pushed further away from the truth and justice in the Zubeen Garg case. He noted that Singapore authorities informed the court that 18 to 20 people were present with Zubeen Garg at his last moments, but the SIT formed by the Chief Minister left out 10 people and focused only on five. Raising questions, Gogoi asked, “Why were the others left out?”
He further asked, “Are there among those who were left out people who have close relations with the Chief Minister and his wife?” Gogoi said this raises the question of whether the Chief Minister is trying to protect someone. He alleged that the chargesheet contains less factual information and more character assassination. Therefore, he questioned, “Is this an attempt to protect someone and tarnish someone else’s image?”
He also questioned whether this is a pattern similar to statements made by a particular party ahead of elections. Referring to the coordination already established among Assam Police, Singapore Police and the Government of India, Gogoi said a concrete step must now come from the Assam Government. “The Assam Government must submit the facts,” he said. He added that today criminals are thinking, “Our job has become easy. We will come out under the open sky. We will come out after the elections.” In this context, Gogoi said, “We fear whether Zubeen Garg will get justice—will he get justice under the Himanta Biswa Sarma government?”
Calling it unfortunate, Gogoi said that despite so much time passing and reports of 200–300 pages being submitted, the people of Assam and Zubeen Garg’s admirers are still far from justice and the real truth. He reminded that the Chief Minister initially said, “Zubeen Garg was murdered.” Therefore, Gogoi urged the Chief Minister to take responsibility and establish direct communication with the Singapore authorities to demonstrate accountability. “This is our appeal. We want information, truth and justice,” he said.
Responding to a media question on whether the government is trying to politicise Zubeen Garg’s death, Gogoi said, “The two governments are saying different things.” He said discussions took place between the two governments and their police forces, the Central Government took the initiative, and a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty was executed. He reiterated, “Initially, the Chief Minister spoke of murder. We have said that the chargesheet contains less about murder and more about character assassination.” He added, “We had thought information would be brought from Singapore, but now the situation has turned out to be the opposite.”
Meanwhile, responding to questions about former AAMSU leader Rezaul Karim Sarkar quitting the Congress just two days after joining, Gogoi said that if one looks at the sequence of events, about 90 per cent of the statements made on the day of his joining were related to Barak Valley–Assam issues. He said Rezaul Karim’s attempt to compare Sivasagar and Dhubri was wrong and inappropriate. Opposition Leader Debabrata Saikia had said the same, and Gogoi said he supported Saikia’s view. He added that both he and Saikia had advised caution in making public statements. Later, Rezaul Karim left the party following his conscience and submitted his resignation letter.
Gogoi also said it was inappropriate to call Opposition Leader Debabrata Saikia a BJP agent. He said the Congress has a single objective. Himanta Biswa Sarma and three or four people close to him were once in the Congress but later distanced themselves. The scams associated with them had Himanta Biswa Sarma as the central figure. Today they are in the BJP. However, just as people left the Congress earlier, people are now beginning to leave the BJP due to the scams and arrogance of Himanta Biswa Sarma and his close associates. He alleged that for 20–22 years, first under the Congress and now under the BJP, a syndicate has been running in Assam, serving personal interests rather than the people. He said only personal families and relatives benefited. “We must free the people of Assam from this,” he said, adding that the Congress, opposition parties and the people of Assam have united for this cause. He said corruption, arrogance, dirty and low-level politics practised by Himanta Biswa Sarma over the past two decades first made people dislike the Congress and now are making them turn against the BJP. “We must bid farewell to such politics forever,” he said, adding that everyone is united and resolute.
On questions regarding alleged threats to bar Congress leaders from minority areas following Rezaul Karim’s exit from AAMSU, Gogoi said only Himanta Biswa Sarma deserves to be barred. He said Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that there would be no ST status before the Assembly elections and alleged that student leaders of Upper Assam had said they did not want ST status before the elections. He said that leaders who once led mass movements have now secretly surrendered before Himanta Biswa Sarma by saying ST status is not needed before the elections. By doing so, Gogoi alleged, the Chief Minister tried to malign student leaders, and therefore those leaders have united to oppose Himanta Biswa Sarma for defamation and character assassination.
Gogoi further said there is no internal conflict within the Congress. He claimed that the BJP is making such remarks to hide its own internal discord. “I want to know what is happening inside the BJP. The BJP is trying to conceal its internal conflicts. We are united to politically defeat Himanta Biswa Sarma,” he said. He added that Himanta Biswa Sarma and Company are united to politically eliminate former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. He pointed out that in Upper Assam meetings held by Himanta Biswa Sarma, Sarbananda Sonowal is not even invited. He said that despite repeated announcements, none of the projects announced by Sonowal for Tinsukia and Dibrugarh were implemented by Himanta Biswa Sarma. The sports university announced by Sonowal has neither a location nor a name, he said, adding that Sonowal’s existence within the BJP has been erased. Gogoi said this has hurt him personally and has also hurt veteran BJP members. He alleged that instructions have been issued within the BJP that those seeking Himanta Biswa Sarma’s blessings should not take Sonowal’s name, show his face, or invite him to the stage. “This is the reality within the BJP, and it deserves to be discussed among the people of Assam,” Gogoi said.
