Guwahati, January 20: Assam is famous for its tea, the one-horned rhinoceros, the Brahmaputra, Maa Kamakhya, Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and Zubeen Garg. Unfortunately, this beautiful and fertile land of Assam is now also being known for a rude and corrupt Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is allegedly building his empire by taking loans recklessly. This is a matter of misfortune for the people of Assam. These remarks were made today by former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and Congress election observer for Assam, Bhupesh Baghel, at an important press conference held at the Manabendra Sharma Complex in Guwahati.
“Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma have built a mountain of assets. Whichever district of Assam one goes to, properties belonging to the Chief Minister and his wife are found there. There are even reports that the Chief Minister and his family have acquired property in Sixth Schedule areas as well,” Baghel said. Referring to the asset declarations submitted to the Election Commission, he added that everything becomes clear by simply looking at those figures.
Baghel pointed out that according to the affidavit submitted to the Election Commission in 2006, Himanta Biswa Sarma’s assets stood at ₹1 crore. In 2011, they rose to ₹3 crore, and in 2016 to ₹6 crore. From ₹6 crore in 2016, his assets have now skyrocketed to ₹17 crore. “This itself gives an indication of the corruption and irregularities committed by the Chief Minister,” Baghel said. He also recalled that in 2014, the BJP had held a press conference in Guwahati branding Himanta Biswa Sarma as the most corrupt leader. “The person whom the BJP had once called the most corrupt later entered the BJP’s ‘washing machine’ and emerged clean. That is why when journalists asked Amit Shah whether Himanta Biswa Sarma is corrupt or not, he said such questions should not be asked. But the people will keep asking the BJP these questions,” Baghel remarked. He further stated that when a Congress government comes to power in 2026, every single act of corruption will be accounted for.
Another observer present at the press conference, Bandhu Tirkey, said that Himanta Biswa Sarma is ruling Assam like Hitler. “As soon as I arrived in Guwahati, I went into a hotel to have tea and spoke to a few people. From our conversation, I understood that the people of Assam have made up their minds to overthrow this corrupt government,” Tirkey said. Calling this election a do-or-die battle for the people of Assam, he added that the fight this time is a matter of life and death for the common people.
Meanwhile, responding to a question from journalists regarding alliances, APCC President Gaurav Gogoi said that there will definitely be an alliance among opposition parties in the coming election. “It is the BJP that is confused about alliances. The BJP has not been able to decide whether it will form an alliance in Rabha Hasong or not. It has also failed to decide whether it will stay with Hagrama Mohilary or Pramod Boro in BTC. It has not been able to come to an understanding even with the AGP,” Gogoi said. He further alleged that within the BJP, only those who malign Sarbananda Sonowal are now being given importance for ticket distribution. Gogoi also said that to suppress talk of the cold war between Sonowal and Himanta, a section of people is spreading misinformation about Jitendra Singh.
On the vacant Rajya Sabha seat, Gogoi said that the Congress is not giving it much importance at the moment. “To win the Rajya Sabha seat, an alliance with AIUDF would be required. We have made it clear that under no circumstances will the Congress form an alliance with AIUDF. Therefore, we will think about that later,” he said.
Replying to a question on recent election surveys, Gogoi said that the Congress only believes in people’s surveys. “Surveys will keep coming. Even during the Jorhat Lok Sabha election, surveys had predicted that I would lose by three lakh votes. Everyone saw what eventually happened to those surveys,” he said.
Reacting to the controversy raised by the BJP over the Kaziranga elevated corridor, Gogoi said, “I am not against development. But development must be sustainable. If construction work is carried out without properly studying the environmental impact of the elevated corridor, the consequences may be counter-productive.” He further alleged that the corridor would fill the Chief Minister’s pockets, and that is why the Chief Minister is upset because he is speaking the truth. Gogoi also said that even the BJP’s alliance partners are unhappy with the party’s functioning and policies, and that is why Hagrama Mohilary directly complained to the Prime Minister in the presence of the Chief Minister.
Gogoi also made public at the press conference a letter issued by the government directing that, apart from DIPR-empanelled hoarding and banner agencies, non-empanelled agencies should also be engaged for government प्रचार work. He said this shows that the people are fed up with the BJP government’s corruption and irregularities, and that the government has already sensed its defeat in the coming election. That is why, he alleged, it is desperately trying to manipulate and cut votes. Gogoi also appealed to ensure that not a single eligible voter is deprived of their voting rights.
